subtle is good! i have read about some reviewer on avs yesterday and he had streamed 4k interstellar through ultraflix for 10 bucks. he had also installed next the 4k tv a normal 2k screen with the same movie. there are differences he said but 10 feet away from both screens and you arent able to tell the difference between 1080p and 2160p. so to put it in a ‘subtle’ way, i gonna buy that uhd player! thx bro!

Yes, but it’s still subtle compared to DVD vs Blu-ray. I’ll post soon about my findings you’ll be able to learn more 😉

Quick update ! I have the player now and the downscale to 1080p and downconvert HDCP 1.4 does work. No need for the Fury.

I did notice that the 20th Century Fox intro video does not downconvert to HDCP 1.4 and will display a HDCP error message. But the movies menu is then shown and everything works afterward.

I just wonder if other movies will refuse the downscale. It would fit with that the player manual says.

And the Fury does fix this for the Fox intro.

i have no problem with that decision, hopefully uhd players are compatible with blurays then our problem is solved i think. cause that means you can choose the resolution like my player does.

cheers

Hi Brad,

That’s what Fox said, not Atmos on Blu-ray for them, even in the disc that accompanies the UHD disc in the same box (normal, if not they would need to press two different blu-ray discs). We don’t know yet about the other studios, but I have the same feeling as you do regarding lack of announcements and the arrival of UHD Blu-rays. Having said that, there was not a lot of major theatrical Atmos releases announced on Blu-ray recently from Warner, Universal and Liongates, so it may also explain it.

so what you are saying when uhd arrives there will be no more blurays available with atmos unless the ones that are announced. that explains why there arent more atmos announcements made the past month. this is really bad news steve… if the downscale doesnt work without hdcp 2.2 i need to make a loan!

Yes HDCP 2.2 exists since 2013. The key thing is that whatever the impact on image, the releases will have more object-based audio soundtrack as some studies like Fox (and hopefully Disney) will start supporting Atmos/DTS:X only with UHD Blu-ray. Fox even said that the Atmos soundtrack would not be available on the Blu-ray in the box, only on the UHD. So if you want Atmos/DTS:X, more and more UHD will become a necessity. This is why I’ll be installing a player in my home theater even if my display is 1080p only.

I will report as soon as I test all of this early March when the player arrives here !

Thanks for your kind words on the blog, this is really appreciated !

good job and thx!
