LG UltraHD Blu-ray Player UP970 Dolby Vision Firmware Released Yet Again

Note: It’s back ! The firmware has been released again, with the region issue fixes.

Note: As of this February 7th, the firmware update has been pulled once again, so if you did not update your player before, you’re out of luck again. It seems that the update was changing the Blu-ray region from B to A in Europe, so it could be the reason why.

Quick post to let you know that LG finally released for a second time the Dolby Vision firmware upgrade this morning for their UP970 Ultra HD Blu-ray player. The firmware was initially released for a very brief period last fall, but was pulled because of unknown reasons.

I quickly confirmed this morning that everything was working well, so know it will be time for some Ultra HD Blu-ray listening in Dolby Vision, starting with Westworld Season 1.

Pitch Perfect Trilogy Coming to Ultra HD Blu-ray with DTS:X

Quick update of the site today to let you know that Universal will release the 3 Pitch Perfect movies on Ultra HD Blu-ray on March 20. All 3 UHD releases will offer a DTS:X soundtrack and the Blu-ray of the 3rd movie will also offer DTS:X.

For the first two movies it’s a brand new object based audio as the movies were not offered in theatres with Atmos nor DTS:X. In the case of the most recent movie, it’s actually one of the rare cases where a theatrical Atmos release is transitionned to DTS:X for home.

Please note that I also added Ferdinand UHD to the list of Dolby Atmos titles and listed the third Maze Runner movie to the list of upcoming UHD titles as Amazon is already taking preorders for it.

ButtKicker Mini LFE Review

After hearing a lot of different opinions about bass transducers for home theatre, I finally decided to experiment them for myself by order a set of Buttkicker Mini LFEs.

The starter kit includes the BKA-130-C amplifier, which provides 45W into 4 ohms or 90W into 2 ohms and two Mini LFE transducers, rated for up to 250W of power input.

What are bass transducers

If like me, you didn’t know much about home theatre tactile bass transducers, they actually take the sound out of your AV Receiver, ideally from the LFE or .1 channel, and transform sound into vibration. To set this up, you install the transducers on your seats by fixing them directly to the seat structure and connect them with speaker wire to the provided amplifier. By using a RCA Y adapter or by using different LFE outputs from your receiver, you connect the subwoofer output to the amplifier.

KEF Q Series 2017 Speakers Review

Note : Before going any much further in this article, I need to clearly state that this is not intended as an audio expert opinion on the speakers. I’m not equipped, nor competent enough, to do a professional review on speakers. So don’t expect frequency response curves and other graphs, this is really more of a gut feeling article on the speakers after a couple weeks of having them in my dedicated room.

As the typical cycle of theatre room upgraditis hit me over the Holidays, I finally decided it was time to move away from my current Cerwin Vega speaker configuration and try a couple of other brands. Thanks to the advice of Rob over at the AVRant podcast, I decided to sample a couple of speaker brands, including KEF, which I honestly did not know much about other than what I heard about them on that podcast.

I started my testing between multiple brands including my existing Cerwin Vega SL series by ordering a center speaker from each brand and doing blind AB testing between them with a speaker selector box driven by my son. The result was strongly in favour of the KEF center, which made me move forward with a full upgrade in the room. I actually recognized and preferred the KEF over the other brands more than 90% of the time and even my wife confirmed with her own blind test.

Coco and Thor Release Dates on Ultra HD Blu-ray with Atmos

Just a quick update of the site release lists, the most important news being that Thor: Ragnarok now has a release date of March 6 and Coco will be available on February 27, both on Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray, the later with Dolby Atmos.

On a bit of side news, I’ve been experimenting in the last weeks with the new KEF Q Series 2017 and with the Buttkicker Mini LFE, so I may post a couple of impressions post in the near future on those !

Denon & Marantz Confirm Consumer Atmos Is Going To 13 Channels

I will back with a longer post on the big CES 2018 announcements, but I wanted to highlight this one as it’s a big news for the industry.

Denon & Marantz just announced two new products that are the first one to achieve 13 channels of Atmos decoding. This means either a 9.2.4 (with front wides) or a 7.2.6 (with six overheads) configuration. Such configurations were not available before outside of semi-professional equipment like the Trinov.

Denon announced the first 13 channels receiver with the X8500H, which will even have 13 amplifiers on board, so no need for external amplification.

On their side, Marantz announced their new pre-processor, the AV8805, which becomes their new top of the line product.

Again, more to come on CES, but this one is pretty great. Now let’s start thinking, 7.2.6 or 9.2.4?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi on UltraHD with Dolby Atmos

Treat this still as a rumour, but at the same time it’s not really surprising. Initial informations to retailers seem to confirm that The Last Jedi will be released this Spring on Ultra HD Blu-ray with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

No word yet on an official date or if there’s any change on also getting The Force Awakens and Rogue One on the format, but it’s a huge news for the industry.

Please note I also updated the lists with some Atmos and Dolby Vision information including:

  • Coco coming to UHD with Dolby Atmos too
  • Daddy’s Home (DTS:X) & Daddy’s Home 2 (Atmos) UHDs with Dolby Vision
  • Murder on the Orient Express UHD with Atmos now has a February 27 date

The Dark Crystal coming on Ultra HD Blu-ray in Dolby Atmos

A quick update to wish you the best for the on going Holidays and to let you know that I updated the lists on the site with the couple of releases announced recently, even if it’s been a pretty slow news period.

The big one is The Dark Crystal anniversary edition coming to Ultra HD Blu-ray on March 6th with a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

The horror movie Jigsaw has also been confirmed with Dolby Atmos on both its Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray next month when it is released on January 23.
