Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles : Dolby Atmos Review

How Reviews Are Done On NextGenHomeTheater.com : Here are some ground rules for review on this site. The first thing is that the movie itself will never be reviewed, as this is not the intention and tastes and opinion regarding movies are up to the viewer. Furthermore, the review will concentrate on the next generation element of the content, so in this case the Dolby Atmos track, while presenting the other aspects. A Blu-Ray 4K would for example be reviewed for visual performance only. There will not by any grades either, just comments and a purchase recommandation in the conclusion.

The Movie

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is another reboot in the recent wave of 80’s and 90’s popular culture rebirth. Is this new version, the four turtles, helped by April and Splinter, will try to stop Shredder and his Foot Clan from getting control of New York City.

Video Presentation

The movie is presented in both 3D and 2D Blu-ray editions in its original 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The video presentation is impressive with great details and vibrant colors. I must admit that I was not hoping for much from a movie with that much CGI effects, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Audio Presentation in Dolby Atmos

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the fourth movie to be released with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack built on top of the Dolby True HD 7.1 track. Once again, only the orignal English version gets the Atmos treatment as the French, Spanish and Portuguese dubs are only delivered in Dolby Digital 5.1.

The Dolby Atmos rendition of the movie is clearly impressive and leverages the features of the new format in a constant manner. Not only did the height channel usage was interesting but the only sound environment is very active and full of movement. There’s once again the same effect of being part of the action and not watching something that I find very interesting.

In term of demo material, the first action scene, where April is initially a witness of the Ninja Turtles fighting the Foot Clan, is a good candidate. You can feel the Turtles moving around on top of the containers in the harbour. All other actions scenes are also impressive, including the final confrontation.

Bonus Features

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is offered with the following special features :

  • Digital Reality : documentary
  • In Your Face! The Turtles in 3D : documentary
  • It Ain’t Easy Being Green : documentary
  • Evolutionary Mash-Up : documentary
  • Turtle Rock : documentary
  • Extended Ending
  • Music Video of Shell Shocked
  • Making of Shell Shocked : documentary

Conclusion

I must admit I loved watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and was pleasantly surprised by the movie but even more by its technical presentation. A visual and audio reference disc that will be used a lot to demo my new system.
